The Following is a re-typed version, word for word, of a letter from Judy’s lawyer that gives you more information about this cause:

From the Desk of Joy Landgraf

Greetings to you and your family as we begin a new spring season. I write this letter to inform you of a tragic incident that has put a good friend of ours in legal peril.

17 months ago, Judy Jones assisted a mother in the delivery of yet another baby in the comfortable setting of a family home. However, due to complications not related in any way to the birth, the baby died three weeks later.

The State of Nebraska in now coming after Judy. She is charged with a felony and facing a 20-year prison term and $25,000 in fines should she lose this court case.

Around the same time of this incident in Nebraska, Judy was giving labor support to another mother from South Dakota. Keeping in accordance to local laws, the couple traveled across the border into Iowa to have a motel birth, and invited Judy as an assistant. Judy is now also facing charges in Iowa for her presence at this motel birth.

Our current health care system does not seem to understand the wealth of benefits that result from a home birth. On the same token, some of our governing officials do not seem to understand our right to the freedom to birth at home.

These two philosophies against home birthing collided whwen the baby died, and now that incident is being used to wrongfully target and criminally charge an innocent, outstanding midwife.

We are asking for your help and support in three ways.

First, please keep Judy and her family in your fervent prayers over the coming months as she prepares and appears for the various meetings with lawyers and court hearings.

Second, please be aware of the following dates for your prayers and for your support:

Thursday, March 21: The preliminary hearing for the Nebraska case in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
Tuesday, July 9: The Iowa trial in Orange City, Iowa. If you are willing and able, Judy has especially requested support of presence at her trial to show the demand and necessity to keep the freedom of home birthing in America.

Lastly, due to the various costs associated with paying bond, hiring laywers, transportation, etc., please prayerfully consider donating to Judy’s legal defense fund.

I have created the Judy Jones Defense Fund, which is legally able to accept your contributions. This is an area of need for her family as she has had to use up her life’s savings to make bond this past December.

We ask for your assistance, a chance to give back to a woman who helped mothers and fathers in their most trying and difficult work of bringing children into the world. Please help her now by carrying her in prayer, making your voice heard to keep the freedom of birthing choice by coming to her trial in July, and by monetarily donating to her legal-defense fund.

Even if she does win the case, which we are confident she will, bringing in expert witnesses and other legal fees will easily reach $50,000. We are not sure what you and your family can afford to give, but donations of the thousands of dollars, hundreds of dollars, or even $50 will be graciously accepted by the Jones family.
