Cloth Diaper Types Pros and Cons

Pockets

Pros:
  • able to control absorbency
  • quick and easy to put on
  • wicks moisture away from baby’s bottom
  • come in a variety of colors and prints
  • very trim
  • may come in one-size, making less diapers required
Cons:
  • they need to be stuffed
  • can be costly
  • detergent build-up may occur on synthetic liners (which may produce leaks)

Diapers & Covers

Pros:
  • Less leaks
  • least expensive
  • able to control absorbency
  • natural fibers against baby’s bottom
  • covers come in variety of styles, colors and prints
  • easy to wash
  • covers can be re-used before washing
Cons:
  • take longer to put on
  • not as trim as pockets/AIO’s (all-in-ones)
  • synthetic covers are not as breathable as wool or fleece covers
  • not as easy for other caregivers/daycare providers

AIO’s (all in ones)

Pros:
  • easiest to put on
  • most like a disposable (thus most user friendly)
  • preferred by daycares
Cons:
  • longest to dry (increased dry time may cause diapers to wear out sooner)
  • unable to control absorbency

AI2′s (all-in twos)

Pros:
  • able to control absorbency
  • covers can be reused when only the soakers/doublers need to be changed thus possibly requiring less diapers
Cons:
  • doublers must be matched with coordinating diapers
  • may be one of the most expensive

Prefolds

Pros:
  • very affordable
  • natural fibers
  • very absorbent
  • can also be used as an insert
  • will remain in great shape
  • can easily adjust to fit your baby
  • easy to wash
  • can be used for other purposes (burp cloth, dust cloth, changing pad, etc..)
Cons:
  • may require pins or snappis
  • requires folding
  • takes time to put on because of the use of a cover
  • may be bulky
  • may take up more space in the drawer/changing table

Fitteds

Pros:
  • does not have to pinned or folded
  • similar to using disposables
  • contains elastic in legs
  • does not take up as much space as prefolds
Cons:
  • requires a cover
  • may take longer to dry due to many layers
  • some covers may not fit well

Flats

Pros:
  • can be folded in many different ways making it easy to customize
  • much trimmer than prefolds
  • cleans well
  • fits all babies
Cons:
  • requires folding
  • requires a cover

Contours

Pros:
  • no folding necessary
  • very affordable
Cons:
  • requires pins or snappis
  • requires cover
